Private 5386, 2/6 th Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Killed in action Thursday, 21st March 1918 in France, aged about 26. Born Temple Balsall, Warwickshire, he enlisted in Coventry. He was a resident of Far Cotton, Northampton. Son of William and May E Gardner who were resident at 44, Fen End, Balsall, Solihull, Warwickshire in 1901. William Gardner married Agnes Hunter on 24 th December, 1917 at St. Mary’s, Far Cotton.

Private 535376, 1 st/15 th Battalion, London Regiment (Prince of Wales' Own Civil Service Rifles).  Killed in action Saturday, 6 th April 1918 in France. Born Far Cotton, Northampton and enlisted in Northampton. Husband of Mrs. E. Gilkes, of 38, Baring Road, St. James, Northampton.

Glenn, Charles Lance Bombardier 37643, 24 th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action Sunday, 2 nd December 1917 in France, aged 29. Born Northampton, enlisted in Weedon, Northamptonshire and called up as a reservist. He was seriously wounded in 1915. Husband of Mrs Glenn of Adelaide Street, Northampton and second son of Charles and Mary Glenn of 25, Alton Street, Far Cotton, Northampton. He had 2 other brothers serving. Before the war he worked for Messrs. Dover Limited, gear case manufacturers, Northampton.

Grigg, Samuel Alfred

Private 30223, 2nd East Lancashire Regiment, formerly 27205, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action Tuesday, 2nd November 1918 in France, aged 24. Born Upton, Northamptonshire, he enlisted in Northampton. Son of the late William & Louisa Grigg, husband of Catherine Grigg of 9, Windmill Street, Hanley, Stoke-on Trent. He was shown on the 1918 Northampton Absent Voters as living at 24 Delapre Street, Far Cotton, Northampton.

Hackett, Thomas Edwin

Private G/69963, 17th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London), formerly 36399, East Surrey Regiment and TR/27044, T.R. Killed in action Sunday, 29th September 1918 in France, aged about 20. Born Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, he enlisted in Northampton. Son of David and Lilly Hackett of 33 East Street, Stapleford (1901). Resident at 16, Letts Road, Far Cotton, Northampton (1918 Absent Voters).

Hall, Charles William

2 nd Lieutenant DSO, DCM, 465 th Battery, 65 th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.  Died of wounds Saturday, 10 th August 1918 in France. He enlisted in 1900 and was sent to Salonica in 1916 as a battery Sergeant-Major. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous bravery under heavy fire at the same time being granted a commission.  Transferred to France in early 1918, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for great gallantry. Husband of C. W. Hall, of 33, Albany Road, Abington Park, Northampton.

Buried Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, France, I. C. 48. His entry on the National Roll of the Great War shows an address of 150, St. Leonards Road, Far Cotton.

Hammond, Herbert John

Private 39776, 11th Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Formerly 25698 Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action Friday, 2nd August, 1918 in Belgium, aged 20. Born in Towcester, he enlisted in Northampton. Son of Harry and Laura Hammond, of Northampton. He was resident at 6, Oxford Terrace, Far Cotton, Northampton.

Son of George and Clara Harris, of 66, Rothersthorpe Road., Far Cotton, Northampton, he was born about 1885. Brother of Thomas Roland Harris below. Any further details gratefully received.

Harris, Thomas Roland

Private 20291, "B" Company, 2 nd Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action Monday, 23 rd July 1917 in Belgium, aged 24. Born and enlisted in Northampton. Son of Mr. and Mrs. G. (George & Clara) Harris, of 66, Rothersthorpe Road, Far Cotton, Northampton.

Hatton, Walter Denis

Private G/67238, 2/2nd Battalion, City of London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). Died Tuesday, 10th December 1918 in Germany following an illness, aged 20. He enlisted in March 1917, he was sent to France in July 1917. Whilst in action on the Somme in March 1918, he was taken prisoner and held in captivity in Saxony. The St. Mary’s Parish Magazine states that he died on the eve of his release and repatriation. Born in Northampton, he was the son of Frederick James and Alice Hatton, of 99, Abbey Road., Far Cotton, Northampton.

According to the Parish magazine, he died on the 14 th September 1914. Any information regarding this casualty will be gratefully received.

Hillyer, Harry

Hillier, Harry Private M2/150599, 303 rd Mechanical Transport Company. (Bulford), Army Service Corps. Died in Marlborough, 9th February 1916 aged 20. Following a vaccination, he reported his arm was very painful and was taken off duty for 2 days. On the day he returned to duty, he complained of being cold and sat before the fire while his comrades went upstairs for supper. When they returned, they found private Hillyer was dead in a chair. At an inquest his death was attributed to heart failure. He was born in Northampton and enlisted in London in November 1915. He was previously employed in Luton after his apprenticeship with Messrs. Johnson and Wrights, Northampton. Son of Henry and Emma Hillyer, of 89, Southampton Road., Far Cotton, Northampton.

Hillyer, Edward (Ted)

Hillyer, Edward (Ted) Private 13343, 6th Northamptonshire Regiment. Died of wounds Sunday, 22nd September 1918 in the Lakeside USA Hospital, France, aged about 25. Born All Saints, Northampton and enlisted in September 1914 in Northampton. He went to France in February 1917. He was wounded 3 times, gassed and suffered with fever. Son of Joseph and Sarah A Hillyer of Elizabeth Terrace, Cotton End, Northampton (1901), brother of Mr J Hillyer of 29, Chace Road, Wellingborough and Mrs A Berwick of 37, Stanhope Road, Northampton. He previously worked for Messrs. E T Trenery & Sons.

Buried St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France S. II. A. 2. He had 2 brothers serving and 1 was discharged.

Lakeside Hospital, Cleveland USA sent a medical unit (Lakeside Unit, World War I) under the leadership of Dr George Crile to Rouen, France, as Base Hospital No. 4, to provide medical care for Allied soldiers. The Lakeside Unit arrived in Rouen on May 25, 1917, and was the first American military unit in Europe during World War I.

Hudson, Walter William

Private 3/10720, 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action Sunday, 9th May 1915 in France aged 44. On this day the 1st Battalion attacked Auber Ridge and the Regimental history noted – “What followed was less a battle than a massacre”. Born Little Houghton, Northamptonshire, enlisted in Northampton. Husband of Gertrude Hudson of 14, Oxford Street, Far Cotton, Northampton (1911 census).
